Frank Denis is the Executive Director at Sail Nova Scotia. With over 25 years in the not-for-profit sector, Frank brings a collaborative and energetic approach to supporting the needs of member clubs, schools, stakeholders, as well as the sailing and boating communities in Nova Scotia.
Through Frank’s efforts, Halifax was able to secure the bid to host the 2024 ROCKWOOL Canada Sail Grand Prix Halifax in the heart of the city, on the Halifax Harbour. Supported by local stakeholders and partners, this event was a huge success, attracting over 50,000 spectators over the weekend, and millions in economic impact for the province.
WHY THEY DID IT
Frank saw this event and opportunity as something completely unique for Halifax, and even Canada. “We knew the importance and benefit that this event could bring not only to the sailing community here, but to the province and city as well. There were three Nova Scotians on the Canada team, and it would be a special homecoming for them.”
BIG OUTCOMES
The two-day event brought over 50,000 spectators to both sides of the Halifax Harbour, to witness the thrilling, windy races. The estimated economic impact for the city was over $25 million.
Legacy sailing programs, a mural, and the excitement of the event mean that the impact of this event is still talked about today.
“The support from the provincial partners, stakeholders, as well as our fantastic volunteers was outstanding and gives the province and city a real edge when attracting events. It will have a lasting legacy on the city.”
